Ah, the scream of the wind, the smell of the smoke...

None of the major fires are near me.
Yet.
The worst of the Santa Ana winds are north of here, too.
So far. It's early fire season.
We name fires here, usually by the local name for their location.

For those of you with friends and relatives in California, here are two websites to add to your ready-reach pile...

There was a canyon fire in San Diego yesterday, put out before it could spread. We heart our firefighters. Mucho y siempre.

How frightening! To know the devastation, thought it's not close--yet.

I can only assume, it's like when the hurricanes strike (the floods and the carnage) on the coast near where I live. It isn't always near-by. but devastation need not be a neighbor to feel its effects.

(((hugs)))

Last year we were evacuated for five days. The Rice Fire came within a quarter mile of our house to the east, then within half a mile from the north, a couple days later.

.
I heard an interview with a firefighter working the Tea fire near Santa Barbara. He said it was a once-in-a-career fire, with winds between 80-90 mph and about 8% humidity.

.
Then he sighed and said that last year he had worked the Rice fire and that it had been a once-in-a-lifetime fire, too. The wind and humidiy were almost the same.

That's the scary part. We used to have fires like this once a decade, with MUCH smaller ones salted in between. So...you're right. It is exactly like living in hurricane country. It has gotten worse...
